East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil

A Musical Interlude on the theme of Justice

East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil is an extraordinary work by Philippe Sands, part literary reading, part semi-staged concert. Through images, words and music, it explores the conflicts and connections between three men at the heart of the Nuremberg war crimes trial: Cambridge academic Hersch Lauterpacht, Polish prosecutor Raphael Lemkin, and Hitler's notorious lawyer, Hans Frank. It is a moving journey into the origins of modern justice and the nature of good and evil.

A personal exploration of the origins of modern justice

The story is narrated by German actress Katja Riemann and the creator of the piece, Phillipe Sands, and is supplemented by music by Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Aragon, Mizraki and Leonard Cohen, performed by acclaimed bass-baritone Laurent Naouri and renowned jazz pianist Guillaume de Chassy. A personal exploration of the origins of modern justice and the fate of individuals and groups, in images, words and music.

Great and very moving Claire Bolderson, BBC

Moving, revealing, daring... beautifully and subtly performed The Observer

Yang Liping Contemporary Dance - Under Siege

Renowned choreographer Yang Liping brings us Under Siege, her stunning vision of the climactic battle between Chu and Han armies, an ambush that changed the course of Chinese history, and a love that would transcend death.
This story, immortalised in opera, music, literature and theatre as Farewell My Concubine, gains momentum and searing poignancy in Yang Liping’s staging. Oscar and BAFTAawardee Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Sleeping Dragon) conjures up visual magic with his set, and the cast – comprising Peking Opera principals, hip-hoppers, contemporary dancers and traditional musicians – are a revelation. Under Siege is Yang’s first modern work and a full-length production with live music.

Scapino Ballet Rotterdam & Combattimento

Virtuoso dance, magnificent costumes and captivating Baroque music by Vivaldi, performed live by Combattimento. In 2012 and 2013, these ingredients made PEARL a box office hit. Pearl is one of the most successful productions of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.

Now, Ed Wubbe has created a companion piece – SCALA - the production that ballet lovers and critics have long awaited. Pearl owed part of its success to the distinguished Baroque ensemble Combattimento. The chamber orchestra will also perform SCALA’S live score, playing lesser known gems from the Baroque era with indomitable energy and verve. Combattimento’s ensemble of 9 musicians is now joined by two singers.
